Paying Attention: Autumn Rituals for Gratitude and Reflection
“Paying attention is a form of reciprocity with the living world, receiving the gifts with open eyes and open heart.”
— Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass
Autumn asks us to do exactly this: to pay attention.
Step outside. Notice the gleaming light through amber leaves, the smell of earth preparing for rest. This is harvest season—in the natural world and in you.
It’s a time to notice what has grown from the seeds we planted. In our practice, our health, our relationships, our hearts. The quiet accumulation of care and attention, now bearing fruit.
The Practice of Looking Back
In our lives, we often focus on aspiration—what we want to build, what we want to become. But harvest season invites us to pause and look back with gratitude. To notice all we’ve been given and all we’ve become.
Take a moment in your practice to feel your strength, your flexibility, your focus. These aren’t accidents. They’re the results of showing up, day after day, breath after breath.
This year has brought me profound new beginnings. Teaching yoga on Skye. Crafting elopement ceremonies in wild landscapes. Visiting Iraqi communities to meet Syrian refugees. Welcoming students into my home for intimate practice sessions. Hosting outdoor wellness gatherings on Skye – forest bathing, outdoor yoga, sea sauna. Completing mentorship with Janet Stone, my 300-hour teacher training tutor. Enrolling in ministry studies with OneSpirit Interfaith Foundation.
These aren’t just activities. They’ve gifted me improved health, deep joy, a sense of calm as I align more closely with purpose. And perhaps most precious: time to be in awe. Playing in Skye’s mountains and ocean. Witnessing magic in the everyday.
What are you grateful for as the seasons shift?
Take a breath before reading on. Let the question settle.
Five Rituals for Harvesting Gratitude
These gentle practices are designed to help you harvest what has grown within you, to cultivate gratitude, and to carry this inner abundance into the colder months.
1. Yoga Flow for Reflection
Move mindfully through your practice. Pause in each pose not just to stretch, but to feel – your body’s strength, its resilience, the small miracle of breath and balance. Let gratitude move through you.
2. Gratitude Journaling
Write down three things you’ve nurtured this year, no matter how small. A daily practice. A difficult conversation. Five minutes of morning quiet. A friendship that deepened. Let this list remind you: you are abundant.
3. Breath of Gratitude
Sit comfortably and close your eyes. Inhale deeply, feeling your lungs expand – take a moment to enjoy your in breath. With each exhale, silently offer thanks – for your body, your practice, the people who’ve held you, the moments that surprised you. Simply enjoy the rhythm of giving thanks.
4. Harvest Altar
Gather fallen leaves, pebbles, or seeds from your garden or a walk. Create a small arrangement of what you’re thankful for. Light a candle. Sit with it. Breathe in appreciation for what has grown – seen and unseen.

5. Evening Reflection
Before sleep, mentally review the fruits of your season. Projects completed, practices deepened, relationships nurtured, quiet growth only you can see. Acknowledge them. Let them be enough.
Carrying Your Harvest Forward
Harvest season reminds us that growth takes time, patience, and care. By pausing to reflect and celebrate, we honour our inner efforts as much as the outer world’s abundance.
Each breath, each movement, each mindful moment becomes part of what you carry forward.
Let your inner harvest light your way through winter.
